My friends saw these flowers in Stanley Park, near Lord Stanley's statue; the photos were taken by Dave Griffiths. Lepechinia hastata (A.Gray) Epling, Pakaha (World flora) - Pl@ntNet identify (plantnet.org) tells me they're Lepechinia hastata, common name would be Baja pitcher sage. Here's a page on that plant: Lepechinia hastata at San Marcos Growers (smgrowers.com). They were described to me as being fragrant. Has anyone ever heard of this? Does the ID seem right?
They have somehow arrived on Maui, and I see that Forrest and Kim Starr have a photo that looks like a good match. starr-150515-0656-Lepechinia_hastata-flowers-Crater_Rd-Maui
I went to see these Lepechinia hastata today - the leaves are very aromatic - it's easy to understand why the common names of Baja pitcher sage, island pitcher sage, false salvia (from the page I linked to above). Here are some leaf photos, the first one demonstrating the "hastata" epithet, for the hastate (spearhead-shaped) leaves. These feel soft on both sides.
