Hello everyone........... There used to be a lemon orchard close to where i live. They bull dozed over it a couple years ago. When you drive by you can see some of the trees that grew back. There are about 20 of them scattered over 15 acres. The city is wanting to build some condos or something there now. They said if i want to move them i can have them. Most of them are 3 to 5' tall. What steps to i need to take to transplant these trees to my 15 acre yard. How far apart should i plant them. On the n, s, e, or w side of my house? I am in USA zone 11. They must be pretty strong if they are still growing there. Thanks to everyone who answers.
So many options, to dig up asap, and ensure as much of the roots as possible so dig carefully towards the tree. Plant where you need them as they will grow where there is all day sun! Grow protected if you have a prevailing wind coming from one direction. You could hedge them at 3 metres apart... or plant orchard style... see your nearest citrus orchard...fertilize as required using a citrus fert.
Thank you I have been waiting for someone to tell me what to do. There is an orange orchard right down the road so i will look at how they are planted.
One thing to watch out for - if they were grafted and they were bulldozed down, it is possible the trees growing back are the rootstock, which likely will not be lemon. It might be bitter orange growing up from the roots if the scion is gone.
