I'm confused. Some say pot the Meyer lemon in mostly sand, others say other things. All agree that it needs good drainage. But what is best? I also grow orchids, and they seem to need the same conditions. I wondering if orchid medium (med. fir bark, charcoal, fine amazon moss, perlite) would do the trick? Thanks, Fred
Orchid media works well, but depending on the actual mix you may need to add a little bit of peat moss or a peat based potting soil. If the orchid mix does not have any fine material like peat moss, you should add 1 part peat moss to 3 parts orchid mix. The mix should be chunky, but with enough peat to retain some water. I use hand crumbled pine bark with a peat based potting soil and it has worked well. I mix the two directly in the container, putting about a 1 inch layer of bark topped with 1/4 inch layer of potting soil. Skeet
yes as skeet wrote Orchid media works well I found two types of this media one type has large chunks, I don't use that one. The other has a finer media that works very well I also add some peat. isaac
THANKS EVERYONE. How about this new potting mix that Miracle Gro has out. 'Catus, Palm and Citrus. Fast draining formulae'. Has anyone tried that? Seems to be a loose, very peaty soil. Fred
First time I have heard about it. I'll have to look for it. If it does not contain too much peat moss it might be worth a try. - Millet
Thanks all. I'm batting 50%. I've lost two Meyers due to soil and over watering. But have a Meyers that I brought home from TX last year that's doing fine. It needs repotting this summer. Also a Calamandin (sp) that I repotted in Aug. Thought I'd lost it, but now it thrives w/fruit. Looking forward to new soil mixes. I going to try the fine orchid mix with some peat added, and the new Miracle Gro Cactus, Palm and Citrus. FNS
