Hi all, I am growing onions inside without the aid of grow lights. I have very bright sky lights, but of course all my veggie seedlings are getting leggy. My onions are getting very leggy and dying... can i cut them back to save them??
I am not the best gardener, but in this situation, I have found the only cure was more light and even then maybe starting over. Young veggies need sufficient light to grow and produce energy. The better their start, the better they will grow on. I would think cutting them back would only be removing energy that they had managed to store. There are some fairly inexpensive fluorescent lights out there. It usually does not take much to help out the veggies if they are receiving some natural light. I just wish somebody would market an attractive grow light system that one could display in the house.
Yep good advice. I have also found that a small oscillating fan can really help provide some a constant breeze to seedlings which they will then use a trigger to grow stronger rather then continue to grow thin and wimpy. -Luke
Farmerlynn, It could be difficult to save those that are already dying. If you choose not to use artificial light, next time when you grow them keep the temperature low, 16 -17 C, and definitely do not over water. Only bog plants can survive over watering without harm. And put the pots on the sunny windowsill. Plants need sun not only for photosynthesis, but also for additional day time warmth it provides and most likely are not getting it from the sky light, especially at this time of year.
