Leatherleaf Viburnum Bark

I was wondering if anybody knew what caused this damage? This is about a 6 foot (1.8m) high Leatherleaf Viburnum [SIZE=-1]([/SIZE][SIZE=-1]Viburnum rhytidophyllum[/SIZE][SIZE=-1]). It wasn't looking good and when I investigated I found this damage. I have a few more pictures if that would be helpful.[/SIZE]

On another thread this was said to be sapsucker damage.
