Occasionally one of my philodendrons will have a problem with the leaf not developing and unfurling quickly enough, and the petiole ends up growing through the unfurled leaf. Sometimes I can unfurl them by hand, but other times the the leaf is just not developed enough to unfurl successfully . I am thinking this is a light, temperature or humidity type of problem, but I am not sure which one. Any ideas??
Which species of Philo is it? Because some of them are prone to that mutation in leaves regardless of conditions.
What are your levels of humidity? Dry or moist? If too arid, they may not open easily.... Someone may add further to this.....
I guess it is caused by lack of humidity, maybe you should spray water often to the unfurling leaf. Just a guess.
The species is P. gloriosum, although I have had it happen on occasion to other species. The conditions are probably fairly dry, as it is winter and the heat is on. I will try boosting the humidity and see if that helps. Thanks for the ideas.
