Laurus?

    Could this be something other than bay? I found it in North Vancouver. It looks a lot like bay to me but didn't smell like one. It smells quite peppery and the smell gave me a bit of a headache...

    Umbellularia californica.

    Causing headaches is a well-known character of it.

    Yes, one of the common names is "headache tree".

    Thanks... That's the one. Definitely more potent than Laurus nobilis.
