    Presumably you are asking about Prunus laurocerasus and Thuja plicata. Under good conditions T. plicata will shoot up quicker. If speed is your priority bamboo is the ticket. Running kinds need to have underground spread curbed to be kept within a particular space.

    Otherwise Myrica californica is nice.
