About two years ago in the summer we had an infestation of black aphids on the branches of our willow tree (about 12 feet tall at the time). That winter the bark on several branches turned black & the cores also blackened. At the advice of the garden centre where we purchased the tree, we cut back all the dead branches in the spring of the following year. We noticed during the summer that more branches began turning black & now several more are completely black. The garden centre informs us that they've never seen anything like this & therefore have no advice to give us. If we can't find out what the problem is, we'll have to cut the tree down & begin over - we'd rather not.

Do you have any ideas about what this might be and if the tree can be saved?

    Thanks.

Probably 'canker'. Willows are prone to scab and canker.

Thanks for replying! I'll search these diseases on the internet for more info.
