We have a forsythia bush that has been here for as long as I can remember. (I am closer to 50 than 40). Here it is close to the end of August, and it is getting buds on it again and has a few blooms on it. It has never done that before. Do forsythia sometimes bloom twice in a year?

Not unusual for these and other early-blooming shrubs. They have the main flush early in the year (such as Feb.) because the flower buds have a comparatively short dormant period. This short dormancy can result in some of them sometimes jumping the gun and opening prematurely, the same year they were formed. Certain fairly common hybrid rhododendrons, 'Yellow Hammer' and 'Elizabeth', are rather often seen flowering rather substantially in October.
