because I know that you are a bona fide real aroid hybridizer!!!! I would like to know if its at all possible to make some sort of cross between LASIA SPINOSA (unicorn plant) and some other genera of aroid. I have a huge matt of Lasia, which blooms very well. Can I try to pollinate the spathes with some other plant? And if so, what would be the best to try?? This is a photo of some of my lasia, in the pond with COlocasia "COffee Cups" and a host of other things, LOL
Thanks for the compliment! Now, if I were inclined to attempt crossing with Lasia, and given that all I have is Lasia spinosa, but I do happen to have some Cyrtosperma species, what I would try just for fun is crossing Lasia with Cyrtosperma. They have a few morphological similarities which, to me as a hybridizer, would make the intergeneric cross a possibility. Would the cross work, and would the progeny turn out to be mules? Well, that would have to be determined by attempting the cross! LariAnn Aroidia Research
Okay, I have C. hamballii (which I have shown in another thread, but which has yet to bloom for me) and I have C. johnstonii. If I was going to do it, how would I do it??
I've never crossed with these genera so I can't really advise on it from experience. I would have to observe the inflorescences, see when female anthesis is, then when male anthesis is, then coordinate my cross when the pollen donor is at male anthesis and, simultaneously, the female receiver is at female anthesis. Even then, I might find that the cross won't work unless it is done in the evening (or the morning), or when the spadix is warm (or cold), or the air/water/soil temperature is . . . You see, this is not as easy as, "just take the pollen and smear it on!". It took me years to perfect my technique on Alocasia and Philodendron, the ones I do know about from experience, and I still miss on occasion within the genera!
