OK Guys, here's an ID for you. I had a seed pod yrs ago - no longer. Pod it's self was 6+ inches long. Pod was brown, very rough out side texture. Stem end was narrow, swelling like a slug in the middle, but narrows again with a very long spike at the end. The spike splits into two horns. It is a dreaded pod in sheep country because it embeds it's self into the sheep's woolly coat and works it's way into the flesh. Any idea's? I would love to have several of these pods to display with other odd pods and such in a dry arrangement. barb
Sounds like it might be a Proboscidea: http://www.carnivorousplants.org/seedbank/species/Proboscidea.htm
BINGO, that's it!!!. It's the ibicella lutea Thank you very much. This question has lurked in the back of my mind for years!!! Barb ;))))
Barb...after reading the hair-raising desciption of this plant from you-know-where, I beg you to NOT go anywhere near these pods without wearing a HAZMAT suit, armed with a blowtorch!
When dried they seem to be quite docile. May a low growl here and there. I like things that are different and this certainly is. Now if I can get someone to send me some pods - just pods - no seeds. Probably wouldn't grow here anyway. ;))) barb
