So I went away from my balcony garden for a week, and some rather odd and surprising weeds popped up. (At least, I assume they're weeds. They bear no resemblance to what I planted.) If they're interesting in any way, I'll let them go, but if they're just going to infect my roses, I'll toss them off the roof. Weed 1 is very hairy, and in this respect reminds me of a nettle, however the overall plant form says "Lamiaceae" to me... Weed 2 is superficially similar to Weed 1, but is not hairy at all and lacks the red leaf margins. Maybe the same family, but definitely not the same species. Weed 3 looks awful familiar but I can't quite place it. Weed 4 popped up in my Dragon's Teeth pepper plant, and defies any attempt to ID it. When it had flowers, they were miniscule and yellow. Weed 5 makes me think Potentilla. Am I right? Should I let it grow? The flowers are really teensy. Weed 6 is a vining plant that my cat likes to chomp on. It doesn't seem to have made her ill. The flowers are about 1mm across. Any help would be appreciated!
Wow, I totally didn't notice that Weed 5 had the same leaves as Weed 2. Neat! Sure looks like they're both Galinsoga. Also, totally awesome that I've got Speedwell growing... And it definitely looks like Weed 6 is Sherardia arvensis.
I go with Tridax for #5 and 2 too. Is the stem square for #1 ? The leaves look regularly arranged. The hairs are pretty regular all over (not larger and spinier on the leaf veins, for example). Does it have an aroma if a leaf is squashed ? Matt
Matthew: weed 1 has round stems and a generic "green" odour when smooshed. The hairs don't urticate, they're very very soft.
