I was just in your marvellous gardens for the first time, and stopped to chat with a staff person who said he was Daniel's assistant... on discussing Garden plant labelling he told us that the Garden is busy looking at a labelling plan and incorporating more informational material in the facility. We discussed the small labels you have now, sometimes present, but hidden away under lower branches. I hope that more labelling and clearly found labelling is done, as I was previously at the Van Dusen Botanical Gardens and found their labelling excellent. I found it terribly frustrating to find so little labelling, and delightful when on the way back we did find some, and as I mentioned in another post on groundcovers, I discovered a new-to-me groundcover labelled "Lonicera" something or other I believe in an Asian plants section which the label said is mentioned in the Jade Gardens book you have published. I forgot to check it when I went into the bookstore. Could you tell me what the full name is, and if it is commercially available or if you every sell portions of it in plant sales? The name "Lonicera" puzzled me as it did not look like any honesuckle I have seen... I would love to see all the large trees labelled and many of the small ones -- so many newcomers to the West Coast try to study up on the trees and need all the reinforcement we can get.
Lonicera is a large genus with a lot of variation between the different species. Without more info on what it looked like, ideally a photo, it won't be easy to tell.
I would hazard a guess that you saw Lonicera crassifolia, a relatively new evergreen groundcover honeysuckle. I noticed this plant this summer when we visited the garden (this is a plant that I have in my garden, and we sell at the nursery where I work).
I replied in this thread, but silver_creek ID'd it too. Comments re: labelling duly noted, thank you.
thank you so much, that's it, I remember the name now. I hope I can get some in Victoria sometime...! It is very "jade" like...
