Looking for a foolproof system for identifying cuttings and seeds I have planted?

Re: Red Ginger (Zingiber alpinia purpurata)?

The only surefire way I know is to wait for them to bloom and label them then.

Sorry, did not make myself clear, if I am going to set some seeds (or a cutting) I want to find the best label system. I purchased some lovely ones on line that said the pen was indelible but just a few short weeks all the labels were faded out by the sun. I am zone 11

In that case, I've always found that chinagraph on popsicle sticks works wonderfully - it doesn't fade, nor is it affected by rain. If you want something more professional-looking, you can have labels laser-printed onto vinyl stickers, and stick these to wooden plaques. The Chinagraph is the only fade-proof method I've found short of having brass botanical tags engraved.

Hi Sue...after years fighting with different so called indelible pens/markers, the best by far and easiest to find is good old soft lead pencil. I now use carpenter's pencils for the bolder width along with nice soft "lead". Either storebought labels or pieces of vinyl miniblinds works equally well for the actual labels.

All inks seem to either fade in the sun or detach themselves from the label...graphite seems comparatively "indelible" ...
