Trees at 2091 West 8th at corner of Arbutus St.:
'Akebono'. Did you notice the tree on the northwest corner of 8th and Arbutus? It's been posted here a few times, particularly some years ago when we were trying to figure out what it was. 'Colt', a dwarfing rootstock. I'm sure it used to be a 'Kanzan', think I saw one red bud in the centre the first time I saw the tree. The flowers are just about out, but it's not as showy as these. Very fragrant, though.
Speaking of 'Colt', I found another one, behind some townhouses on Cypress north of 6th. I saw this from 6th Ave (first photo shows my first view of it), had to trespass to get to the back of the house. It's very tall, and necessarily narrow in a very confined space. I was confused at first, then wondered about the fragrance, went to the one on 8th to compare and decided they were the same.
And some 'Akebono' trees at the southwest corner of Delamont Park, at 7th and Arbutus.
I'll check it out the next time I'm in the area. Thanks.
Very fragrant now, too. A delight.
Three 'Spire' west of Kitsilano Pool.
Noticeable is the pink staining on the petals.

Beautiful 'Afterglow' on Balaclava between 5th and 6th.
And a sandwich of 'Akebono' and 'Afterglow'.
Wow, you almost made those things look attractive.
Returned to Tatlow Park at MacDonald and Point Grey Rd - the four young trees shown here are 'Tai-haku'. The five old trees (not shown) are 'Ukon'. Too bad they are not the same.
The last photo shows one 'Ukon' branch with bud against a backdrop of 'Tai-kaku' (in bloom now).

Nice old 'Beni-shidare' at house on SW corner of Trafalgar and W2Ave. Worth a look, especially if you like forsythia, too.
Tree at 3096 Yew St.:
Beautiful 'Shirotae'. This cultivar can be very sickly, but when they're nice, they're outstanding. I'd have expected that address to be at 16th, but I see it's near 15th.
'Tai-haku' are blooming later than last year (see post #197)
And 'Hosokawa-nioi' poised to bloom later as well.
A couple of 'Hosokawa-nioi' blossoms at the base of tree.
