New growth on strap-leaf maples can sometimes be larger and more palmate than what they typically would be otherwise and/or older branches. Too, sometimes you can have growth that will be palmate vs strap-life some years - the other year, my Beni otake (a larger, older tree) had mostly palmate leaves.
