Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage More about the "T" of Kanzans at 29th & Ross: They extend from Elgin street east to Inverness, with two more trees on the north side just past Inverness, then from 29th to 31st on Ross, stopping to allow for three cedars on the west side of the street, and then continuing to 31st , where they end at an absolutely magificent specimen on private property, on the northeast corner of 31st and Ross. Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage Three Shirofugens in Brewster Park's Cherry Haven at Victoria and 26, May 6, 2008. You can see five different cultivars of ornamental cherries in this park, all in good condition. With the exception of the two Somei Yoshinos, Tai Haku, Ukons, Kanzans and Shirofugens are all still in bloom.
Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage The buds emerge pale pink; then open to white blossoms. You can see, in the first picture, the pink bottom, then white top, petals. As the blossoms age, in the second picture, the white petals turn pink again, in a chromatic ebb and flow of colour.
Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage More Kanzan petals are on the ground now than are on the trees, but it still looks pretty nice in this neighbourhood. I'm not sure I have the streets right - Kanzans at, I think, 28th and St Catherines, 29th and Inverness, and the Kanzan/Ukon combo Anne posted on 29th on the east side of Knight.

Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage Kensington's only known site for Autumnalis (Rosea) is in bloom on the first week of December, 2008 at the southeast corner of Fraser and 29 Avenue. The buds are emerging pink and the flowers are mostly white with tinges of pink.
Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage Yes: 'Autumnalis Rosea' (and not Autumnalis (Rosea)). Rather different from 'Autumnalis' in several respects, including the fact that the latter is almost never seen out here - I never have seen one here myself, but what was probably an example of this cultivar was growing in a Seattle park into the 1980s. When I compared the two flowering side-by-side at the RHS garden, Wisley the differences seen shown by photographs in English books were all the more apparent.

This is what these accolades look like now: And across the street there is a Whitcomb, although last year we thought there wasn't: And this is what the approach to this block looks like: BTW, north of this block, from 32nd north for about six blocks, there is an amazing stand of what appear to be Kanzans (not even in bud yet) - huge, very old trees. Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage The four Whitcombs on the east side of Knight street, between E. 17 and E. 18 are ready for viewing April 5, 2009. Knight street is busy, but these trees are safely protected in a church parking lot behind a fence.

Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage The Autumnalis Rosea at the southeast corner of Fraser and E. 29 has produced a second blooming right before Easter. It was in bloom during the first week of December, 2008 (see posting in December). The following week, Vancouver endured nearly a month of heavy, regular snowfall. In February, the melting snow revealed brown buds, and the tree looked dead. We Kensing-cottagers are tough however, and on April 7, 2009, Autumnalis had both flowers and leaves out.
Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage Young cherry in full bloom on April 8, 2009, on the east side of Victoria, south of E. 23. The location in a Japanese churchyard, with the building behind it, probably helps. Two larger, less sheltered, Yoshinos on the west side of Victoria, in Brewer's Park, are just opening their flowers. See entry on Pandora, April 9, 2009.

Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage The accolades on Dumfries between 33rd and 32nd are now in full bloom and very beautiful: ... and in the middle of the same block, in front of 4833 Dumfries, is a great big cherry of a different variety. I'm fairly sure it's an Akebono: Laura 3:)
Re: Kensington/Cedar Cottage Kensington welcomes Pandora! Upon examination and discussion, the tree in bloom on April 8, 2009 at the southeast side of Victoria and E. 23 has been identified as a Pandora based on the following: the pale-pink flowers have notched 5 petals, about 2 cm. across and are in umbels of 2 and 3, with 1 cm. fine-haired pedicels; the calyx tube has a noticeable rounded bump or bulge at the bottom of the funnel to the sepals. [Edited by wcutler May 4, 2020]: Anne Eng reports that this is no longer there.
