Last year I purchased a Kalmia latifolia at a local eco-market. The shrub's appearance left a lot to be desired but I was always intrigued by the round blooms and couldn't resist it. I replenished the soil and continued to grow it in the same container and it turned out to be my most satisfactory plant-in-pot this year, however instead of the round flowers with the fused petals, I got literally hundreds of flowers but they all split as soon as they opened to 5 petals. The buds had the typical Kalmia appearance, yet when they opened they were ALL 5 petals.

I did some 'Google' research couldn't find any info. Does anyone know the cause? And if it will ever go back to being a Kalmia as we know it?

Maybe it is the cultivar 'Shooting Star' or 'Comet'.

I guess I forgot to mention when I bought it, the flowers WERE round looking the way you would expect them to. So not sure! But just checked and yes it looks a lot like 'Shooting Star' except it didn't USE TO BE. Can this just happen to it?

    This is weird!
