Nadia and I saw a lot of things in the garden today. The Koelreuteria paniculata is finally coming into bloom. I highly recommend a look at Douglas Justice's beautiful photos and writeup for the Photo of the Day on July 27, 2009. We noticed some flowers not marked with red at the centres (in third photo), but I can't see that they otherwise look different from the others, and I can't see anything that says if there are separate male and female flowers.

Kirengeshoma palmata was the featured plant at the entrance, though we didn't come across it until the end of our day (and I have no idea where we were when we saw it).

Just past the entrance, the Euonymous carnosus is covered in flowers. This was Botany Photo of the Day on August 11, 2006.

My favourite rhododendron, R. barbatum, was showing off its barbs in the sun. This one is across the path from the ones I posted before. There were others near it that didn't seem to have any barbs at all. I keep coming across photos of this that show the red flowers but not the barbs that make it interesting. That seems to be missing the point.

We found a new (to us) hydrangea, H. strigosa, with relatively small, narrow leaves. Nice and fuzzy, though.

Yes, Rhododendron barbatum is not always barbed.
