I got this hybrid Alocasia in 2005 from an IAS meeting. It's been blooming like crazy the past several months and has great looking leaves.
That plant is similar to some I have, hybrids involving A. odora and either A. lowii/longiloba or A. sanderiana (I have them all), including some complex hybrids involving three or more species. The one jewel alocasia hybrid I have developed from scratch is A. odora x A. reginula, which is quite a spectacular plant, and from which cross I obtained just 6 viable seeds. All are mature blooming size plants now. LariAnn Aroidia Research
I've actually been reading your Jewel Alocasia articles at the Dave Garden forum. Very interesting, and I'm using the name for the group of small Alocasias because I think it's apt. I bought the aroid, but now can't remember the actual name...I think I got it for $19 at the auction (and missed getting a P. speciosum - grrrrrr) As to your hybridization efforts, I read your Giant Alocasia activities as well (including with A. robusta) and I see one guy in aroid-l saying he has odora x robusta, which I think may be yours.
Yes, he did get one from me just recently, and I guess he was so excited to get it that he had to announce it on aroid-l. I have a few more I'm willing to release if anyone else is interested, but they are pricey (to fund my research). LariAnn
