We have had a potted jasmine tree for 16 months now. It hs been kept in the house most of the time. It has bloomed and dropped its leaves and is now growing out longer limbs with very few leaves. I'm wondering if it should be trimed back to keep it looking more lush. If so, when is the best time to trim it?

The best time to trim jasmines are in the fall or winter. Don't trim jasmines in the spring. Buds of the tree are set in the fall/winter for the following year and trimming in the spring basically destroys all that work. During summer, when its growth is most vigorous, it is a good idea to trim back foliage. I've had them flower and leaf out again madly during the summer. To bush it out sideways, pinch the tips of new growth. Lateral growth on existing stems will kick in...or kick out rather. If you want it taller, pinch off side growth.
