Hi! I have a japenese staunton vine (stauntonia hexyphyllia?) I p[lanted it about 3 years ago and it has been doing fatastically well. The wood at the bottom of the vine seems to be losing its leaves and they are growing quite sparesley. I have never cut the vine back and it throws out many shoots at a fast rate. Should I cut it back?

It's the top of the vine that matters, not the bottom. The bottom will get quite woody, like a tree trunk, as time goes on. But even then it will sprout new growth if you cut the vine way back. If you need to cut it back (and in most settings this will need cutting back!), you should not hesitate to do so. Just cut after blooming if you want to enjoy the flowers.

Thank you for the reply. The vine is wonderful and flowered for the first time this year (if only briefly). It will need to be cut back at some stage as it is overtaking our pergola!
    Many Thanks
