I recently bought these 2 maples from ebay. One is a Acer Palmatum Red Wood and Shin Deshjo. The Red Wood was said to be a new cultivater from Oregon similar to Sango Kaku. They said the difference was it's red bark would be retained on both current and previous years growth. TheY said Sango Kaku tends to grey out on 2nd year growth. Any input on this would be appreciated. Also as you can see by the pictures these are small tree's. I live in Richmond Virginia, do you think these tree's would make it thru the winter, especially the small one. The larger one will be planted near the road without much protection from the wind. If I wait till spring can I keep them indoors or should I think about my putting them in my shed? Does it hurt or screw them up if i don't let the leaves fall and keep it indoors. THANKS!

The leaves must fall off. And I think your trees will be fine in any case. Size is no issue at all. Leave them out until the leaves fall and then put them in your head assuming that it is UNheated. You don't want it to sprout leaved in February. To protect the roots you can plant them in the ground while still in the pot and transplant them early next spring.

If it were me I wouldn't really worry about. Maples are generally very cold hardy.
