Bought my house 6 years ago. I had 4 large Japanese maples. 1 died. Last fall I had 5 new ones growing on their own (about 3-5 inches above ground). I dug them up, put them in pots and got them through the winter. But I don’t know when to plant them back in the ground. Any ideas?

First of all. Welcome to the maples forum Joel. Next to your question, and I have a question or two for you. Are they in bud or leafing out ? How well rooted are they in the pots ? If the answers are 'not leafing out and well rooted' then you can plant then out now. Tbh you are quite safe planting in the ground at any time of the year from pots as long as they have a good root system. If I buy a maple from a nursery to plant out, I will check for good roots before planting out. At this time of the year I do not like to disturb the roots, so it's out of the pot and straight into a prepared hole in the ground.
    Hope that's of help.
