I admit I'm addicted. I love Japanese maples. I am looking for suggestions for specimens that have leaf characteristics that can be appreciated best up close and would be suitable for container planting.
Ideally I need a tree that would get direct sun from early morning till mid afternoon.
Suggestions that can best be appreciated up close are what I'm looking for. Winter shape would be a plus but unique leaf color, variegation, shape and texture are important.
    Thanks in advance for help.

The reticulated cultivars have leaf characteristics that look interesting close up and are well suited to growing in containers. Some good examples are 'Kasagiyama', 'Shigitatsu sawa', 'Aka shigitatsu sawa', and 'Amagi shigure'.

thanks. The Olsons Frosted Strawberry looks like a winner. Can it take some direct sun?

I'm not sure on how much sun it can handle. It seems like the leaves that get more sun are darker with more purple and the leaves that are almost fully shaded have more of the reticulation & white/green coloring. I would say a little direct morning sun will help bring out the color but then filtered sun to shade through the hottest part of the day would probably be best.

I've only had this maple for a few days but I'm not really impressed yet. If the whole tree looked like the leaves I posted, I'd be in love but that's only one small area that looks like that. I was really excited to be getting this cultivar and I guess it just didn't live up to what I was expecting. From a distance it deffinetly does not look like anything special, I'll post a pic to give you an idea. But it is very interesting on close inspection. It's growth habit is very odd, it almost looks like a dissectum but that actually works very well for the spot I had picked out for it. Well here is a full pic to get an idea of what I'm talking about.

I second Olsen's Frosted Strawberry, I love this cultivar, and the amount of sun you're describing I think would work for it.

Hana matoi, Manyo no sato, Shigi no hoshi, Squitty (super-small leaves), Sherwood Elfin or Tsukushigata would be nice too.
