I always soak my JM seeds before placing them in the refrigerator. Does anyone know how to determine viable seeds from soaking them. Some sink and some float? I have been growing rootstock from seeds for years and had very poor germination in the spring of 2014. Did anyone else see this?
I harvested seeds off a few of my trees the other day, and have them in pots outside - it's my first attempt, so we'll see what happens. I was told that the seeds that float (with the wings pulled off) aren't viable.
I am trying to germinate seeds for the first time, also. I have read to soak the seeds in hot water for 24 hours and then put them in the refrigerator in a potting mix in plastic bags for 100 days. Is this what you do? Thank you very much for any advice. Mary
Mary, here's a thread with some very good info on the more general issues of seed soaking and cold stratification: Maple seeds wont sprout
