First time participant: In scanning the forum, I have not found a recommendation/solution for this situation... I have a 10 year old maple on a sloped, west-facing front garden on a traffic-quiet street in North Vancouver. One main branch (facing north) has a number of smaller branches with dead leaves (starting in mid-August 2013), and a number of small white blotches (see photos). After visiting some Master Gardeners last weekend, they suggested joining this Forum for advice. (They suggested it might be anthracnose, venticillium wilt, or bacterial blight.) Any advice on pruning/lifesaving methods are appreciated!
this maple have a low % of survivor..sorry for this word but no more advice .just one several prune ,and copper solution ..after work the soil around the bark i hope your maple remain in life
I had waited for someone more savvy to reply, but I'm afraid Alex is right and I would give you the same advice: prune hard what is unhealthy, and treat with copper sulfate. I would also seal the wounds, once treated, with wound sealant, or candle wax: i found out that candle wax works very well. It's cheap, and if it doesn't "pop up" in the spring, it means that this section of the tree is dead so you have to try and cut it further down. If it pops up, it means that the tissues are active and begin to heal. The copper solution will have penetrated in the surface of the dead wood during the winter, so it's safe to leave it "naked" when the growth starts. My 2 € cents' worth../.
Grazie and Merci - even if the news is tough... I'll follow your suggestions and keep my fingers crossed. Cheers.
