My Bloodgood is 7 years old. The last couple of years some of the leaves have been drying around the edges and ultimately die. In just the last week about 1/3 of the leaves have been affected (see photos). The tree is on the north side of my house and gets little direct sun. A similar tree died two years ago. I replaced it and it died the second year. I replaced it yet again, and that one this year is doing fine, so far.

Th tree with the dying leaves is thinner than it should be and many of the smaller branches have died (see photos.)

Any suggestions on what I should do? Maybe give up on Japanese Maples? My neighbor has a Japanese Maple in the same orientation at his house and it is 50 years old and doing fine.

could this tree be having to compete too much for moisture?
