    Hi

We moved into this house last year so I am not sure how old the Japanese maple tree is. We saw some green moss like thing developing last year and now the bark is peeling of every where.

    bump.

I have the same problem. And found this searching for a solution.

Two gigantic JM's about 60 years old. Leech field for septic is in the front yard and past owners has used root killer to keep roots out.

90%+ of the tree is healthy. but certain branches are dead or dying with bark peeling off. Live in south Napa CA.

    Any input in appreciated.

first use copper in low solutions on the bark ,the cause are more one is fungi attack ,another froze in early spring, over watering or under watering.

    Hi.

I saw your post today. I have not checked my email in a while. I could not do anything much for my tree. I called couple of tree care companies and they suggested to just fertilize and nourish the tree. So far the tree is same as before. I do see off and on some mushroom growth which tells me there is rotten wood on tree. I just keep removing the mushrooms and taking care of it. Hoping that it survives few more years.

Let me know if you applied the solution other person suggested and if it helped.

    thanks
    Vandan

I had a similar problem on two opf my maples, a potted one, the other one in the ground. On both of them, the damaged bark was facing S-E. I came to the conclusion that there was a frost at night, and a sunny day after, which could explain why the bark was damaged. I removed the dead bark, treated with copper sulfate, cut the bark until I could see some cambium, and then put wound sealant on the living part of the bark. The tissues began to heal.

It's a different matter of course for big trees, but apparently, this works quite well on smaller ones.

The pictures were taken on Feb. 28, 2013 and Sep. 28, 2013.
