I have a giant, beautiful Japanese Maple that I love and it has 4 freaky, funky, spongy fungi growing on the trunk at around 5' high. The fungus is very damp and has slight funky odor too. Any ID and care instructions would be greatly appreciated!!!! See pictures. The first one has a nickel in the picture to give the freaky fungus scale. Pic 2 show slightly smaller one fun guys on other side of trunk.
Bad news, it means the tree has extensive internal decay. It may continue to live for a few more years yet, but time to think about getting a replacement started now so it is a decent size when this one does succumb.
Noticed you listed your location as Marcellus, NY - you should contact Diana at Topiary Gardens (also in Marcellus, if I'm not mistaken). Wonderful lady, very knowledgeable about maples, she might be able to give you a bit more specific info and advice. Good luck!
Re: Japanese Maple freaky fungus Thank you Mike F and Maplesandpaws for spending time on my post and replying! I truly appreciate it and it's good to know people are still out there helping people. I left a message for Diana at Topiary Gardens and look forward to talking with her. And I love the fact that someone 1,500 miles away in KS put me in contact with a someone I never knew was here less than 5 miles from my house. Thanks again and UBC Botanical is very cool!!
Re: Japanese Maple freaky fungus No worries, happy to help! Sometimes it's just easier to see things in person rather than through pictures. :) In fact, I have to admit I'm a bit jealous of how close you are to her; she's awesome, and has great maples at very good prices. When you do speak to her, let her know I sent you her way. :)
