I was just wondering what determines if a Japanese maple will flower or not. Is it triggered by climate, age or determined by cultivar? I have some 1 year graft trees and they flower as well, will the seeds be viable from these very young trees? (Assuming I get them to germinate).
Generally, maples have to be of a certain age before they will begin producing viable seeds, but fresh grafts and younger grafted trees can produce seeds if the scion wood was taken from an older seed producing tree. I have never had much luck growing seeds from young trees like this however. -B
planted seeds from 4 different 1 gallon cultivars 10/29/2005 (92 day cold stratification) and none has germinated yet and those 4 are out of only 22 (out of 82 total) cultivars that have NOT germinated. will keep you apprised, poor owner.
