Japanese Maple - Bark

Discussion in 'Maples' started by Unregistered (Steve Bastear), Dec 30, 2005.

  1. I have a Japanese maple in my front yard. It has been healthy in its location for about 5 years now. This summer I noticed that on one of the main trunks of the tree (5 main trunks coming from the ground) there is a blemish in the bark. The blemish is getting larger. The bark is being removed and the wood below the bark is deteriorating. The bark on the branch is nearly gone around the entire trunk. I wanted to know if this is a disease that can be corrected with proper care. I was going to wrap it like a graft with tape and black sealant but want to know if there is a better solution.

    Thank you
    -Steve

I have a photo that I can send.

    Steve,

Please post you photo. Does your issue look like either one of these?

I think my tree has a similar issue to one of your pictures. I think the weight of the branches is applying torque to the trunk and splitting it. It seems healthy (the canopy is growing well) but I suspect the trunk will give out if we leave it as is. Is there anything that can be done?
    Thanks for any help.
