Ours is only 4 years old. It's a nice tree, with glossy leaves. It is fully hardy here in Coquitlam. My neighbour has a much bigger tree that has been established for quite a number of years. Successfully fruiting seems to depend on the length of the warmer days - the fruits on our tree will only set and mature enough to ripen in time if the summer has been hot and sunny. The duration of the warm season also seems to affect the final size of the fruits. Even my neighbour's tree may not produce ripe fruits if there has been a particularly cold and overcast August. I leave the fruits to ripen on the tree right until the temperature threatens to dip below zero celcius. Half ripe fruits eventually ripen on a sunny window ledge (I am not even sure if sun light is necessary for them to ripen). The most amazing site with this tree is the multitude of little yellow to orange pumpkin like fruits, on a bare leaf less tree in the fall - very appropriate for 31st October. The tree was in short supply when I was looking for it a few years ago. I finally got my hand on one by asking a nursery to call me immediately when their shipment came in. He says they just fly off his nursery withing days! It may be more readily available now. There is an excellent example of it on the front yard of a house near East 33rd and Nanaimo in Vancouver.
Seattle has some over 35' tall. Troublefree, colorful eastern Asian fruit tree. Glossy, bold foliage. Orange edible fruit in winter, resembles tomatoes clinging to the bare branches. http://www.arthurleej.com/a-Trees of merit.html
my parents has one in their backyard for over 15 years....they have not bare much fruit. Dad been threating to chop it down. I really like this tree. Any ideas on how to have this tree bare some fruits???? Any info is much appreciated
I think the tree needs a girlfriend, ie, a cross pollinator. I don't know if plums or apple trees would do, but a frut tree blooming in the same period. Is the fuyu persimon disease resistant?
Thanks Benchmark for the quick response!!! The tree has lots of girlfriends :) we got plum, pear, figs and also apple from the neighbour. My dad once said...maybe too many girlfriends to bare fruits. Tree is disease resistant, very nice tree but unfortunate no fruit.
