Hi! I have been collecting Japanese maples for about ten years now. Some years ago I came across a rather large Acer Palmatum Hoshi Kuzu. Later I learned it is a cultivar introduced by the legendary J.D. Vertrees. Does anyone have a list of cultivars introduced by him?
Hi and welcome. I don't have a complete list but know of a few examples: 'Kamagata' 'Koto ito komachi' 'Yubae' 'Kamagata' is also said to be the mother 'Hoshi kuzu'. Most, if not all, examples of 'Yubae' have lost the variegation for which it was originally selected, so I don't know if we can consider this to really exist any longer. I understand Mr Vertrees grew many thousands of seedlings every year, but very rarely introduced or named anything as he considered most to be not different enough from existing cultivars to warrant naming.
Thank you very much. Will be looking for those for sure. Also interesting to know that he didn’t have too many introductions. Could perhaps have a complete collection eventually then. The Hoshi Kuzu is really special in my opinion. Though it seems not to popular. Not the best for spring, but in summer, fall and winter it is excellent.
