Hello! I had a part of my backyard full with weeds and I was digging it to make a new lawn. I was thinking to buy some compost to spread on this surface (about 600 sqf) and to reseed grass. Today I read an article about double digging and i was excited about it. In the article they used this technique for vegetables. Is it worth to do double digging just for grass? Thank you! Best rgds, A.
I wouldn't do this for vegetables or grass. Reversing natural soil layers is a mistake, unless the site has been recently disturbed by equipment, including scraping away the topsoil you are starting with aerated, coarse material that roots like to grow in near the surface with finer material that has washed down below that. Clogging the pore spaces of the top layer with fines brought back up from below is not a step forward. For vegetables I would bring in better soil and dump on top, if necessary and for turf I would follow common procedures involving preparation of soil near surface, with emphasis being on grading and forming a good surface. Grass is not fussy about soil and long as it is kept watered and fertilized, does not sit under water for extended periods.
