Italian Fig --has not fruited yet

    The plant is in its 3rd year in my yard, is in a sunny spot, and grows well. But it has never produced a fig. I have a brown turkey nearby that is younger, smaller, and actually produces fruit.

    Is the secret in pruning?

    If they appear and then fall off it is not adapted to your climate. If none have shown yet it just hasn't gotten big enough yet, apparently. Pruning will have no effect other than cutting off branches that might have been starting to bear otherwise.

    Pinching the growing tips in the summer can help. Pinch out the tips after 5-6 leaf axils have formed, before the terminal sets. Do this on every branch until early August. After the terminals set, the protofigs form in the leaf axils, and these late forming figs are small enough to overwinter and ripen the following summer.
