Another hard mass growing out of a dead tree stump. About 6 in by 8 in, dirty white and hard. I wonder if this is a fungus that has caused the death of the tree.

Not sure about the hard mass - it may be part of the tree distorted. I see dark lines on the mass suggesting it is inhabited by fungi.
If this is a maple stump I would look for fruiting bodies of Kretzschmeria deusta amid the black parts.

    Thank you.
Hard to tell what kind of tree that stump came from. It is cut off at about five feet, Quite a large diameter, and with no bark.
I notice many trees have substantial masses of various colours.
How to tell whether it is a fungal infection or a distorted growth?
