I live in Las Vegas and it has been 105+ outside but these things seem to be taking over our lawn. I have a 2yo and would appreciate any help in finding out what this stuff is and if it is toxic etc. 2008_0806Image0001.jpg

I first thought it was more cat vomit and picked it up (with gloves and a baggie) it exploded in black dust (spores?) and had olive size hard 'things' inside, 4 or 5. Then there was another and now they are claiming most of the lawn. I turned the water off for 3 days and the temp was 105-115. I was hoping they would burn off... but they seem to like it dry and hot? They don't have any shade where they are growing and are taking over. Advice?

    Thank you so much!

A slime mould. Harmless, and good for the garden, it lives by breaking down mulch and dead leaves into plant nutrients.
