    is this the dreaded empress weed growing along the road side in my zone 6 St Louis neighborhood?

    Yes, these are Paulownia.

    Just a suggestion....if it's your property and you don't want them to grow there....cut them down....easily done because they tend to have hollow stems and use those huge leaves for mulch!! They are great weed blockers!

    I don't know if using tormentosa was a typo or not (it should be Paulownia tomentosa), but I think that's an apt name for places where it is invasive!
