Good morning! A co-worker gave me one of those amaryllis bulbs in a box at Christmas. When I opened it, it had already sprouted a few inches but I potted it and it is growing really well! It never bloomed but in reading I find that the flower bud is supposed to come up with the leaves. So I assume that it won't bloom this time around and I'll try carrying it over to next year. However, the leaves have grown to 28 inches long (see picture - the ruler is 12"). Do amaryllis leaves get that long? We're thinking we are really growing a palm tree :) Thanks.
Yes it's amaryllis and the leaves are long because it's not getting enough light. If you want it to bloom you'd better find a place where it gets several hours of sun a day. A porch or patio would work. HTH Chris
Thank you - I knew I would get a quick reply. I actually will put it out in the garden if it ever stops snowing here in NH (more predicted for tomorrow).
It will do well outside planted in the garden for the summer. Plant it in light or partial shade and fertilize it every 2-3 weeks in the summer stopping around mid-August. The leaves may initially tatter, tear, and burn when exposed to the sun and wind so try to acclimatize it in full shade for a while. Finally....don't let it get touched by frost while outside. Simon
