I planted some phlox seeds last year. Never saw them come up (along with a bunch of other things I planted). This year something came up where I planted the phlox, but it's a different colour than what should have come up (based on the seed package they were supposed to be pink and white). I forgot to include some kind of measure device when I took the picture (and I lack a hard ruler), but the diameter of the flower is 2 cm. The picture is attached, I hope. Is it a weed, or is it my phlox that got confused and changed colour? Or is it something else all together?
The only native Lychnis in Alberta - Lychnis chalcedonica - has different flowers. This is probably some Silene. And it is a weed in your case. On the other thought, if they sell it as a phlox, it may be an imported weed, rather than native. So, it might be a Lychnis, then. These two genera are distinguished by the number of styles: Lychnis has 5 styles, Silene has 3. The flower is large enough to count them.
Thanks for the answers! When I first googled Lychnis alba I pretty much jumped "that's it!" but tomorrow I'll have a closer look and count the styles.
I am just a practiced amateur, but I was thinking it looked like mugwort. I thought Lychnis all have fuzzy, silvery leaves) I have the fuscia colored - aka Rose Campion/Lychnis Coronaria - (please excuse my spelling) This is an old post anyway - I just checked it out since I have a Phlox identification question I just posted
Mugwort or Artemisia vulgaris is very different. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=m...ChMIiN6I2JqRxgIVwVwUCh0IwQC5&biw=1536&bih=728 There are several sp of Lychnis, however few have silver, fuzzy leaves. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=l...ChMIrJvli5qRxgIVxNMUCh0STQCB&biw=1536&bih=728 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychnis Lychnis coronaria alba is as you describe...except I believe it has been renamed Silene coronaria. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=l...ChMIiJD7j5uRxgIVCdEUCh0x2ABW&biw=1536&bih=728 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silene_coronaria
