Hi all My first post to this forum. I'm intrigued by this plant, I initially thought it might be from the orchid family but I'm not so sure now. It grows quite freely in and around the bodrum peninsula on the aegean coast of turkey. This photo was taken beginning of October, temps where in the high low to mid 30's. We had had no rain since end of April and a very hot summer - temps up to mid high 40's The flower spikes are between 3.5ft and 4.5ft tall, I've never detected any scent. The ground was extremely dry, as you can imagine, and I don't recall any leafage, just the flower spikes. attached (hopefully) 3 images showing the plant and it's suroundings. Hope some of you can come up with some pointers as to what it is many thanks Sue
Hi Lila Thanks for your reply, I went of in search of your suggestion - very promising, tho' still not entirley sure it's right, tho i did find a refernce to a Asphodelus aestivus, know as Turkish asphodel which has similar characteristic i.e. the line running through the petal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Asphodelus_microcarpus_b.web.JPG your suggestion of Eremurus seems possible but the petal shapes seem a little soft and the images i found where quite pink in colour. I'm following lots of leads from your suggestion :o) Many thanks Sue
Urginea maritima or Red Squill. Native to the Mediteranean area. I have one in my personal collection. http://images.google.com/imgres?img...svnum=10&um=1&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&sa=N
