   This hemispherical mass is attached to a dead tree stump. About 8 inches in diameter, black, hard and has patterns on the surface. Is this a fungus?

   Yes it is - this is an old decaying conk, possibly Fomitopsis or Ganoderma, hard to tell at this stage.
