I can't identify this tree/shrub in my back yard. See pictures. It is about 3 m tall. Is this going to grow into a tall tree or is it just a skinny shrub? It's leaves are compound, opposite, pinnate. There are some small thorns on the branches. I've noticed this fall it has some sort of seed pod(?). It looks like two dried up leaves rolled up like straws attached under a small white cap.

I would really love a shade tree in this spot. If this is a shrub - how do a prune it to make it more full?

    Thank you

It looks very much like Siberian Pea shrub (Caragana arborescens), possibly a columnar variety like 'Sutherland'. It's never going to be a shade tree for you.
