It is a succulent..... I have it growing in my garden as well. Aptenia cordifolia, perhaps? Does it have teensy weensy little hot pink aster-style flowers?
lorax, if you enlarge the pic, you'll see a bud in the upper area - kinda near the middle. looks pretty much like a dark & bright pink in bud form... pretty little plant! i wonder if it would be hardy here in zone 6?
Thank you. It is indeed Aptenia cordifolia. I took the picture a couple of months ago when there was still one little red dot of flower. Now it is just green all over so I had a hard time comparing it to pictures in my book. My mom found it somewhere and put it in our yard last year, saying that it would cover the dirt area. It does grow quite well, but it is very slow in covering up the dirt. :)
Wow, really? Here in zone 12/13 it grows like a weed. Mine is the cascading cover for the cement rings that enclose my raised beds, and every so often I have to encourage (read pull out) it to stay in its place rather than choke out the carrots or squashes. Oddly enough though, asparagus will hold its own against Aptenia.
