We acquired some property a while ago where the previous owner had started establishing a large garden. There are a number of plants that we have not yet been able to confirm what they are and we need some help. The plant shown in the attached photos is quite large and spreading. The leaves are evergreen and about 2 inches long. The pictures were taken on November 11 this year and show the plant with white flower buds and red berries. The leaves take on a slight orange colour around the edges in the winter months. Is this a Sorbus of some sort ?
Photinia davidiana (formerly Stranvaesia d.). Like related Sorbus aucuparia, a commonly sold ornamental that has gone wild in this region.
Thank you very much. This is the first time I've used the UBC site and it is fantastic. I have a few other plants that I will need help on from time to time. Appreciate your help.
I may have another Photinia around, but my wife tells me it is a Sorbus Aria...maybe her love for the opera is clouding her judgement so I should probably send in a picture just in case ! Anyway, my garden is just west of Victoria on the coast, so tea and crumpets any time...I have over a dozen large rhododendrons that need identifying !
I'd be right up except I don't want to bother with renewing my passport. Better just keep posting those photos.
