Hello, I hope someone here can tell me what exactly my plant is. I'll post pictures at the end of my post. My Mom had bought this plant from a flea market from a Mennonite woman who said her mother use to keep these plants as house plants. All she said about them was that it was a Prayer plant and that it's difficult to repot them and that the soil should always be kept moist. Once I got it, I did a search on prayer plants and I have yet to find any that look like the one I have. I keep it in front of my bedroom window so it can get the morning sun during the Spring and Summer months and it also has thorns on the stem. I don't know if other prayer plants have the same thing. It also adapts to things rather quickly. If there is a moderate breeze coming in through the window, the stems drop. It would almost be like you holding your arms up in the air then suddenly dropping them to your sides. It tends to do this twice before it can easily handle the wind. Also, sometimes if you touch the leaves, they will close up only to open back up a few minutes later. I appreciate any help you can give me!
i agree with mimosa pudica. i can also see why the mennonite's would call it a 'prayer plant' - because the leaves close up at night (and when you touch them) and look like hands folded together to pray. common names often cause confusion - different locales may use the same term for completely different plants. as evidenced here. it's hard to find the latin names sometimes...so we do tend to rely on the common.
Thank you! I looked up that name and I found my plant. It's nice to finally know what it is and how I can properly look after it. :)
