Hi. Several friends have remarked on a certain plant we have in our garden. It is usually the first to flower with the most beautiful smelling petals -- a distinct and pungent lilac scent. The leaves come shortly after flowering, followed by the red berries (where the petals were) now in mid summer. The leaves look nothing like our common lilacs so am wondering if in fact it is related to the lilac family? Any info is appreciated.
Looks like Daphne mezereum. The flowers do have a beautiful scent. No relation to Lilac (Syringa) http://images.google.com/imgres?img...n-gb:IE-SearchBox&rlz=1I7SUNA_en-GB&sa=N&um=1 http://images.google.com/images?q=d...1I7SUNA_en-GB&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi
Yes that is the baby. Doesn't now surprise me that it's a daphne due to it wonderful aroma ..and poisonous attributes -- we shall be more careful with it! Thanks very much for the ID.
