I purchased this Manchurian Ash last July for my mother. I've now received a picture saying the tree is looking odd. What is it doing and does it need to be taken back to the nursery for their 1 year warranty? The tree is in Manitoba, if that affects anything. Thanks for any advice!

That does not look good at all.. the bark splitting off, never mind what's underneath. Is the tree otherwise ok on top, or not, and is it supposed to do well in your freezing winters?

Looks like sunscald or something else that killed the bark on one side (could be deer), followed by re-growth on the other side. There's a good chance the wound will cover over fully and the tree be OK (assuming there is a good lot of foliage on the top).
